Diaz has previously worked as a production assistant at ESPN following his 1996 graduation from Florida State. Diaz and Richt were both on the Seminoles staff as FSU appeared in back to back BCS national championship games in 1998 and 1999.

The Seminoles lost to Tennessee following the 1998 season and defeated Virginia Tech for the 1999 national championship. Diaz left Florida State to work for two years as a graduate assistant at North Carolina State. Holtz’s father Lou was the head coach of the Wolfpack from 1972-75.

Diaz’s first full-time coaching job was as the linebackers coach at NC State from 2002-03. Richt eventually left Florida State following the 2000 season for a 15-year stint at the Georgia head coach from 2001-15. After being fired by Georgia Richt returned to his alma mater from 2016-18.

Diaz received the most important hire of his coaching career in 2016. Richt brought Diaz to the Miami football program as the defensive coordinator in 2016. Athletic director Blake James acted quickly to hire Diaz to replace Richt when he abruptly resigned last December.

Diaz had been hired as the head coach at Temple earlier that month. The Miami football program had to pay the Owls a $4 million buyout.
