The Miami football team will travel to Shreveport, Louisiana to play Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl the day after Christmas.

A victory over Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl for the Miami football team will avoid the Hurricanes’ first losing season since 2014. The 2014 season also ended in the Independence Bowl with a loss to South Carolina. The Hurricanes finished the 2014 season 6-7 after the loss to the Gamecocks.

Louisiana Tech travels to Shreveport, just an hour from their Ruston campus with a 9-3 record. Miami has won all four meetings with Louisiana Tech by an average margin of 26 points. The Bulldogs began the season 8-1 before losing two of their final three games. Lousiana Tech was not at full strength in the late-season losses.

Quarterback J’Mar Smith and Louisiana Tech receiving yardage leader Adrian Hardy were suspended for the losses to Marshall and Alabama-Birmingham. Linebacker James Jackson sat out the Bulldogs’ loss to the Thundering Herd. Louisiana Tech will be without cornerback Amik Robertson for the Independence Bowl.

The Miami football team will also be without several key players. Defensive ends Jonathan Garvin and Trevon Hill, wide receiver Jeff Thomas and linebacker Michael Pinckney all announced that like Robertson they are sitting out to get ready for the NFL Draft. The missing Hurricanes gives younger players a chance to step up.

Defensive end Jahfari Harvey, wide receivers Mark Pope and Dee Wiggins and LB Sam Brooks will get a chance for more snaps as Miami begins to get the younger players ready for the 2020 season. At his Independence Bowl press conference on Tuesday MIami head coach Manny Diaz was not ready to name a starting QB.
