There have been three prominent names mentioned who Miami could pursue in the transfer portal at QB. Former Wake Forest QB Jamie Newman, K.J. Costello of Stanford and Jett Duffey of Texas Tech have been the names mentioned most prominently who could attract interest from Miami.

Newman was named honorable mention All-ACC in 2019. Playing in a wide-open Wake Forest offense Newman completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 2,868 yards, 26 TDs with 11 interceptions. Newman also ran for 574 yards and six TDs this season. The consensus expects Newman to transfer to Oregon.

Costello is recovering from an injury-plagued 2019 season. The rising senior threw for 1,088 yards with six TDs and three interceptions in 2019. Costello completed 61.1 percent of his passes. David Lake of Inside the U on the Through the Smoke podcast referred to Costello as statuesque and comparted him to former UM QB Brad Kaaya.

Costello has run for only 96 yards and three TDs on 88 carries in his collegiate career. All three of Costello’s TDs and 92 of the 96 yards came during his freshman season in 2017. Lake and his Through the Smoke co-host Andrew Ivins speculated that Costello would not fit Lashlee’s spread offense.

Duffey is the most experienced QB in the portal who would fit the spread. The former Texas Tech QB has exceeded his three-star billing coming out of high school. Duffey completed 65.1 percent of his passes in 2019 that would have been a  Miami record for 2,840 yards, 18 TDs and five interceptions.
