Two graduate transfers that the Miami football program has made contact with are working with Jarren Williams quarterback coach Quincy Avery.

Graduate transfers Jamie Newman of Wake Forest and Anthony Brown of Boston College have decided to move on to other schools for the 2020 season and are working with Jarren Williams’ quarterback coach Quincy Avery in Atlanta this week according to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic. Miami is recruiting Newman and Brown.

According to Feldman, Avery has spent time on the staff of UCLA and has worked with Brown and Newman for a few years, usually in the offseason and during spring break. Avery is a private QB coach who has worked with Deshaun Watson, Dwayne Haskins and current Ohio State QB Justin Fields.

Avery’s time working with Fields who transferred from Georgia to Ohio State last year gives him a good insight into the portal. Feldman mentioned that Brown and Newman have been friends for a few years since their time playing in the Elite 11 camps. Both have developed far beyond their three-star recruiting rankings.

Newman was named honorable mention All-ACC this season after leading an elite offense this season. Wake Forest was fifth in the ACC in scoring offense, third in total offense and second in passing offense. Newman was second in the ACC in total offense and fifth in passing. He is the number one QB in the portal.

Brown did not receive as much of a chance to shine at QB in run-oriented Boston College offense under former head coach Steve Addazzio. Brown missed half the season with a broken leg suffered against Louisville in October. In two and a half years at BC Brown completed 54.9 percent of his passes for 4,738 yards.
