Mark Schlabach of ESPN is the first to report that former Wake Forest quarterback Jamie Newman who the Miami football program was hoping to land via the transfer portal has enrolled at Georgia.
The decision by former Wake Forest quarterback Jamie Newman to sign with Georgia is the second major quarterback in the transfer portal that the Miami football program has lost out on this week. Former Texas Tech QB Jett Duffey announced on Thursday that he was transferring to Tulane.
Newman was top QB nationally in the transfer portal. In addition to Georgia and Miami, the former Demon Deacon signal-caller was also considering Maryland, Oregon and Washington. At 6’4 230 pounds, Newman has the ideal size to fit the new Miami spread offense under recently hired offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee.
Newman is equally adept throwing the football and running. As a junior, Newman completed 60.9 percent of his pass attempts for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Newman ran for 574 yards and six TDs. Newman was second in the ACC with 286.8 yards per game in total offense.
Newman led a potent Wake Forest passing offense finishing fifth in the ACC with 252.7 YPG. The Demon Deacons were rolling earlier in the season before losing their two leading receivers in November. Newman struggled with 175 yards, three TDs and an interception and 87 rushing yards in a 27-21 Pinstripe Bowl loss to Michigan State.
Miami plays at Michigan State next season in September and will travel to Winston-Salem to play Wake Forest with the date and time to be determined. Schlabach reported that Newman will battle with three QBs on the Georgia roster to replace Jake Fromm who left Athens for the NFL Draft with a year of eligibility remaining.
Miami is still in play for several other graduate transfer QBs. One of those is expected to be former Boston College QB, Anthony Brown. Brown and Newman have been working out with Atlanta based QB coach Quincy Avery who also coaches current Miami QB, Jarren Williams. Former Stanford QB K.J. Costello is considering Miami.
