Miami football expected to sign grad transfer QB D’Eriq King
The six-day saga of former graduate transfer quarterback D’Eriq King has appeared to reach the conclusion all Miami football fans were hoping for. King will sign with the Hurricanes and begin classes on Tuesday according to multiple sources
Houston quarterback D’Eriq King created a buzz when he announced his entrance into the transfer portal on Monday night. The Miami football program has appeared to have won the battle for King after multiple reports on Sunday morning stated the graduate transfer QB is expected to sign with the Hurricanes.
Miami was immediately installed as the number three favorite to sign the dynamic signal-caller. After LSU and Arkansas appeared to have their place in the running decrease, the Miami football program has been trending. The Hurricanes have landed a major upgrade at QB for new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee.
CaneSport managing editor Matt Shodell was the first to report on Sunday morning in a post he linked to on Twitter that a source told him that “you guys are going to be very happy this week.” in relation to King. The speculation on what every move King has done in the six days since entering the transfer portal has been feverish.
After former Wake Forest QB Jamie Newman announced he was transferring to Georgia, King instantly became the best signal-caller in the portal. The former Houston QB was a Maxwell Award Semifinalist and is on the shortlist of players with odds to win the Heisman Trophy in 2020.
Arkansas apparently was out of the running for after they began classes on Thursday. Kendall Briles who was hired at Arkansas to be their new offensive coordinator after being relieved of his duties at Florida State following the 2019 season was the OC at Houston in 2019. LSU has had extensive staff changes in the last week.
Passing game coordinator Joe Brady left Baton Rouge to become the offensive coordinator under new head coach Matt Rhule. The Tigers also lost defensive coordinator Dave Aranda who left LSU to succeed Aranda as the head coach at Baylor. That appears to leave Miami as the prohibitive favorite to sign King.
Several other outlets have since confirmed that King is coming to Coral Gables. Manny Navarro of The Athletic reported that King will begin classes on Tuesday. King is a major upgrade at QB. The Hurricanes to gain any consistency from their QBs in 2019 under former offensive coordinator Dan Enos.
The addition of King to the Miami football roster will help the Hurricanes on and off the field. Jarren Williams and N’Kosi Perry often had maturity issues during the 2019 season. King will provide a boost that Miami so desperately needs in the QB room. The next thing to keep an eye on is who enters the transfer portal from Miami.
Hurricanes third-team QB Tate Martell has been mercilessly trolled by Miami football fans and those throughout college football after transferring from Ohio State. A report came out on the eve of the 2019 Pinstripe Bowl that Williams would transfer before he decided to stay in Coral Gables. Miami is likely to lose at least one QB.
