The Miami football team was a mess on offense in 2019 and it permeated throughout the entire team. Head coach Manny Diaz has done what he can to fix it by added new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee and a strong leader at QB in graduate transfer D’Eriq King.

Miami head coach Manny Diaz and new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee did everything they could to sign former Houston quarterback D’Eriq King. Sunday morning news broke from multiple sources that King has decided to join the Miami football program. King is expected to enroll in classes in Coral Gables this week.

The deadline to enroll in classes at Miami is Tuesday. He should have an immediate presence in the locker room for the Miami football program and more specifically the quarterback room. The Miami offense deteriorated during the 2019 season via a rift between former offensive coordinator Dan Enos and QB Jarren Williams.

King was a leader and did whatever his team needed to succeed during his time at Houston.  The former consensus three-star QB signee with Houston, King spent the first two seasons with the Cougars at wide receiver and once returned a kickoff for a touchdown. King will add the maturity and experience the Miami needs.

In an article posted by Manny Navarro in The Athletic, he sited King’s observations of his leadership skills. The future Miami QB discussed how he motivates his teammates and what NFL QB he compares himself to. After the belligerence that Enos was alleged to have used last season Lashlee and King will take a different approach.

"“I’m not a screamer. I’m more of a show you how to do it, work as hard as I can and try to get my guys going (kind of leader)…I love Russell Wilson. He’s a smaller quarterback. He’s like 5-10, 5-11. I kind of try to play like him because I’m a smaller guy too."

King had 59 receptions for 504 yards and three touchdowns as a receiver at Houston. All but one reception came during his first two seasons with the Cougars. King has also returned 11 kickoffs for 256 yards and a touchdown and six punt returns for 29 yards. He has shown the willingness and versatility a team needs.

Diaz wanted to remake the leadership for his offense in 2020. Lashlee being brought in to replace Enos and King to almost assuredly be the starting quarterback has certainly changed the outlook for Miami. Now they have to prove it on the field. Lashlee and King should bring a more positive outlook for the Hurricanes in 2020.
