The Miami basketball team travels to Durham, North Carolina on Tuesday night to face Duke with the loser assured of dropping their third straight game.

The Miami basketball team is on the road facing a top 10 opponent for the second straight game. Miami travels to Duke on Tuesday night after blowing a nine-point lead on Saturday afternoon at the Watsco Center to archrival Florida State. The Hurricanes previously lost last week at North Carolina State.

Time is running out if Miami wants to earn their third NCAA Tournament berth in four seasons. Losing tossup games like to Florida State on Saturday are opportunities the Hurricanes cannot afford to miss. The game Tuesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium is the fourth in the last six against a current top-eight team for the Hurricanes.

Duke pummeled Miami 95-62 at the Watsco Center in Coral Gables on January 4. The game was the homecoming for Blue Devils center Vernon Carey Jr. Carey Jr. is the son of Miami football alum and former Dolphins offensive lineman Vernon Carey Sr. The 6’10 freshman center dominated Miami inside with 24 points and nine rebounds.

Carey shot 11-14 from the floor as the Miami basketball team had no answer him inside. It is going to be tough for Jim Larranaga to top Carey inside the second time around as the Hurricanes are thinner inside without backup forward Keith Stone. Stone had six points, six rebounds and three steals against Duke earlier this month.

Miami received good performances from their stellar backcourt triad of Chris Lykes, Dejan Vasiljevic and Kam McGusty on Saturday in the loss to Florida State. The Hurricanes’ lack of depth is hurting them late in games for the second year in a row. Lykes, Waardenburg and Vasiljevic all played at least 40 minutes versus Florida State.

McGusty played 36 minutes as Larranaga went with primarily a seven-man rotation. Freshman guard Harlond Beverly played 26 minutes off the bench, Walker 13 and their classmate Isaiah Wong had a two-minute cameo. Stone is expected back in early February. Getting Beverly back healthy is a big boost to the Hurricanes.

Beverly came off the bench and was a Clark Kellogg stat sheet stuffer. The Michigan native scored eight points, had three rebounds, two assists, two steals and made one of his two three-point shots versus Florida State. Freshman Cassius Stanley is another player to watch for Duke. Stanley had 20 against Miami in the first meeting.
