Miami basketball gets blown out by Duke for second time this season
The Miami basketball team was blown out for the season time this season in an 89-59 loss at Duke. The Blue Devils never trailed in dominant victory at Cameron indoor stadium.
Duke scored the first six points of the game, stretched the lead to 45-16 in the first half and settled into a 48-24 halftime lead. The Miami basketball team played at less than full strength. Chris Lykes entered Tuesday night with a groin injury and Kam McGusty was recovering from back spasms.
Miami legacy, Duke freshman center Vernon Carey, who dominated the Hurricanes in Coral Gables did not have as much of an impact in Durham. Duke freshman forward Matthew Hurt lived up to his name against Miami on Tuesday night. The Minnesota native put a hurt on Miami with 22 points including 4-7 on three-point attempts.
Hurt and added six rebounds and three blocks. Duke was simply too much everything for Miami. The Blue Devils controlled every stat category except rebounding and steals. Duke had a 39-36 edge on the boards and Miami had a seven to five advantage in steals. Even with that, the Blue Devils had the final three swipes.
Redshirt junior center Rodney Miller continues to improve for Miami. The seven-footer finished with13 points and 13 rebounds. McGusty matched Miller baker’s dozen to lead the Hurricanes in scoring. D.J. Vasiljevic with 12 was the only other Miami player in double figures. Lykes had a rough night, finishing with nine.
Other than Vasiljevic the Miami backcourt was abysmal shooting the ball. Juniors Lykes and McGusty and freshmen Harlond Beverly and Isaiah Wong combined to shoot 8-36 from the floor. Vasiljevic was 5-11. The Hurricanes made 19-22 from the free-throw line or the final margin could have been closer to 40.
Miami travels back to the triangle on Saturday when they play a noon matinee at North Carolina. The Hurricanes travel to Chapel Hill 10-7 with a three-game losing streak. The Tar Heels are 8-9 overall with a game at Virginia Tech Wednesday night. UNC has dropped four straight and lost eight of their last 10.
