In an open letter to Miami football fans on an Instagram post quarterback, Jarren Williams stated his only regret was not winning a national championship with the Hurricanes. Williams announced in the post he was entering the transfer portal.

Jarren Williams’ ascension to enter the transfer portal has been discussed for the last 13 months. On the eve of the Pinstripe Bowl in December 2018, a report broke that Williams was seeking a transfer from the Miami football program. Williams stayed after talking to former QB coach Jon Richt and tight end Brevin Jordan.

Miami lost to Wisconsin 35-3 at Yankee Stadium, but Williams decided to stay. He remained with the Miami football program even after head coach Manny Diaz added former Ohio State QB, Tate Martell, as a transfer in January 2019. Diaz became the Hurricanes’ new head coach on December 30.

Diaz was elevated to Miami head coach after Mark Richt (Jon’s father) abruptly resigned three days following the loss to Wisconsin. Diaz had an 18-day stint as the head coach at Temple. Despite Martell coming to Miami with a lot of fanfare, Diaz was steadfast in his promise that the QB competition would be wide open.

None of the main QBs on the Miami football roster Martell, Williams and N’Kosi Perry forged ahead during spring practice. Most of the buzz was that Martell had problems throwing the football and Williams was clearly the most accurate. By the time Miami played Florida in the season opener, Williams was named the starter.

On Friday morning following the Instagram post above by Williams on Thursday night, he officially entered the transfer portal. Williams initially committed to Miami in November 2017 following his visit to Coral Gables. The Georgia native attended the Notre Dame-Miami football game that weekend won 41-8 by the Hurricanes.
