Williams has three seasons of eligibility remaining. There is no way to know what would have happened had Williams stayed with Miami. Many assumed that Martell was going to win the starting QB job with the Hurricanes in 2019. It is an even greater projection for King to start for Miami in 2020.

If Williams had stayed at Miami he likely would have been the primary backup to King. Williams would have been an injury or ineffectiveness away from earning his starting QB job back. After being the likely backup in 2020, Williams could have also learned from King and been the starter for his final two seasons in 2021 and ’22.

Williams’ decision to move on could be a risky one. He would have had three offensive coordinators in three seasons at Miami. At least in Coral Gables, Williams was familiar with Diaz and should have had comfort with the defensive staff being there. Now he will join a new program and will have to sit out 2020 without an NCAA waiver.

Kentucky does not seem to be a likely destination for Williams. The Wildcats already added former Auburn QB, Joey Gatewood. Kentucky signed four-star pro-style QB Beau Allen. Ohio State recruited Williams out of high school and that has been mentioned. If Williams joins the Buckeyes he would have to sit behind Justin Fields.
