Miami football legendary wide receiver Michael Irvin Sr. questioned how the Hurricanes have not been able to find a quarterback during a Wednesday morning appearance on the Joe Rose Show on WQAM.

Miami football legend Michael Irvin discussed his college and NFL head coach Jimmy Johnson, the state of the Hurricanes and why they cannot find a quarterback during a Wednesday morning appearance on the Joe Rose Show on WQAM at radio row at the Super Bowl. Irvin was his usual candid self.

Irvin has stayed close to the Miami football program as an alum and at the father of back up tight end Michael II. Irvin alluded to the dreaded three-game losing streak to end the season. He was at the Independence Bowl loss to Louisiana Tech. No player personifies what Miami was about during their prime that Irvin did.

Under Johnson, Irvin was the leader of a Miami football program that brought the Hurricanes to the next level that was established under Howard Schnellenberger. Irvin still holds the Miami career record in touchdown receptions with 26, is fourth in school history with 143 receptions and third with 2,423 receiving yards.

Irvin was one of the creators of Miami Hurricanes swagger. In Irvin’s three seasons in Coral Gables, Miami finished 33-3 and won the 1988 Orange Bowl to finish off an undefeated National Championship season. The Hurricanes were a victory away in the 1986 Sugar Bowl and 1987 Fiesta Bowl from two more National Championships.

Irvin discussed watching the announcement on Fox NFL Sunday that Johnson would be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer and the problems that Miami has had at quarterback. Irvin also threw his support behind Manny Diaz as the Hurricanes head coach.

"“I was so happy I got emotional watching it and teared up. I was 300 yards away from the studio I wish I would have known they were going to do it. I certainly would have popped over there, but I had an inkling. He certainly deserves. He earned it. There is always that bottom before you make the rise. This year was as close to a bottom as we’ve been in a long time. I like Manny…I think he’s a good guy and the right guy for the job. We need to find that QB. Miami has to find that QB. It blows my mind that it is difficult for Miami to find a QB. We used to be QB U, now all of a sudden we can’t find a QB.It’s amazing we can’t find a QB.”"

Irvin played under two great college QBs in his three years as an All-American WR. In his first two seasons, Irvin caught passes from 1986 Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde who’s son Vincent also played at Miami. In 1987, Steve Walsh succeded Testaverde and led Miami to their only National Title under Johnson.

Walsh was the last of four straight Miami QBs to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. Irvin and Johnson’s Hall of Fame compatriot Jim Kelly was the first and Bernie Kosar bridged Kelly and Testaverde. Getting a QB who is the clear leader of the team will be critical for Miami going forward. It could be transfer, D’Eriq King.
