New Miami Hurricanes quarterback D’Eriq King has a chance to break several single-season records for the Miami football program in 2020.

New Miami Hurricanes starting quarterback D’Eriq King has a chance to challenge several single-season records for the Miami football program if he plays at the same elite level he played at Houston as the Cougars starting quarterback from 2017-19. King announced he was transferring to Miami in January.

At Houston, King was on pace to set the career record for rushing TDs in program history. King has 28 career rushing TDs. The Houston record is 39. If King had spent his entire career with Miami he likely would have re-written the records books for a career. King will have a chance to set several single-season Miami records in 2020.

King started 20 games at quarterback for Houston spanning the 2017-19 seasons. In his only full season playing QB for the Cougars in 2018, King completed 63.5 percent of his passes for 2,982 yards and 36 TDs. King ran for another 674 yards and 14 TDs. King has the chance to have the most prolific season ever for a Miami QB.

Bernie Kosar set the single-season Miami passing record with 3,642 yards in Jimmy Johnson’s first season in 1985. Johnson’s pro-style offense was innovative at the time for college football. Under new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, King has a chance to shatter that record in 2020.

Under Lashlee, SMU was 13th in FBS in passing offense in 2019. The Mustangs also featured a graduate transfer at QB. Former Texas signal-caller Shane Buechele threw for 3,924 yards, 34 TDs and 10 interceptions in 2019 for SMU. If King can duplicate those numbers he will rise to the top of the Miami Hurricanes record books.

A season like Buechele had would drive King to break Kosar’s single-season passing yardage record for the Miami football program and the passing TD record of 29 set by Steve Walsh in 1988. The 63.5 completion percentage by King in 2018 was slightly better than the 62.7 Buechele had with SMU in 2019.

The Miami record for completion percentage in a season is 65 percent by Jacory Harris in 2011. In Lashlee’s offense and based on his performance at Houston, King should come close to completion percentage record for a single season by a Miami Hurricanes QB. Miami QBs have not been known for their rushing prowess.

If King has the season he is expected to he should shatter the records for most rushing yards and rushing TDs in a season by a Miami Hurricanes QB. King provides Lashlee a more dynamic runner at QB than Buechele did. The 2020 season is setting up for King to have the most prolific season for a QB in Miami football history.

The often-maligned Malik Rosier holds the Miami record for total yards in a season with 3,588. King had 3,656 with Houston in 2018. Buechele had 4,033 with SMU last season. With Lashlee and King teaming up in 2020 the expectations should be for King to approach and potentially surpass Buechele’s 2019 numbers.

The Miami Hurricanes offense is expected to come out of the dark ages with the switch from the Dan Enos pro-style offense to the Lashlee led high tempo Urban Meyer style spread. With King running the Miami offense several Miami passing and QB records should fall in the autumn of 2020.
