The 2020 Miami football signing class will produce good players down the road but only a couple have a serious chance to contribute early. The one freshman who is likely to contribute the most on defense in 2020 will be the jewel of the class, cornerback Avantae Williams.
Williams is an All-American safety, a consensus top 50 player, and ranked second at his position. While the Hurricanes are stacked at safety, a talent like Williams might be too good to keep from seeing the field in some capacity. The road to playing time won’t come easy for Williams as a spring or summer enrollee.

The Miami football roster has numerous safeties returning that have starting experience. Bubba Bolden (recovering from injury), Gurvan Hall, and Amari Carter all received valuable playing time in 2019. The roster also has Keontra Smith, but he plays best as an in-the-box safety.
Smith and Carter could move to striker with Romeo Finley graduating. Gilbert Frierson is expected to be the starting striker in 2020 If one or both of Carter and Smith make that move it makes Willams’ chance of getting playing time that much easier.

Miami will build their defense for the future with four-star defensive lineman Chantz Williams and Elijah Roberts, four-star safety Jalen Harrell and four-star cornerback Isaiah Dunson. But based on depth and talent level Avantae Williams should the best season among the Freshman.
