Miami hosted Virginia Tech in the third of a five-game homestand after the Hurricanes second bye week of 2019. Miami has played poorly following a bye week for several seasons. It continued against the Hokies. Virginia Tech took advantage of four first-half turnovers by the Hurricanes.

The first three interceptions of Jarren Williams‘ collegiate career and a fumble by N’Kosi Perry who replaced him helped put Miami in a 28-0 deficit in the second quarter. A hail mary caught by tight end Will Mallory on the final play of the first half were the only points Miami scored in the opening 30 minutes.

The Hurricanes fought back behind a career day from Perry who threw for a career-high 422 yards and tied his career-high with four touchdowns. A missed extra point following a game-tying TD in the fourth quarter cost Miami momentum. Virginia Tech scored the game-winning TD on the ensuing possession.

The Hokies emerged with a wild 42-35 victory. Virginia Tech lost to Kentucky 37-30 in another wild game in what is likely to be the final Belk Bowl. The Wildcats scored a TD in the closest game to a walk-off victory during the 2019 bowl season. The Hokies finished the 2019 season 8-5.
