Payton was often regarded as the best WR in practice during the 2019 season. There have been some questions why he was not given a chance to play by former offensive coordinator Dan Enos and WR coach Taylor Stubblefield. Payton played in four games in 2019 to maintain his redshirt and had one reception for 23 yards.

Sophomore CB Christian Wiliams

Christian Williams was second behind Payton and the highest-ranked defensive player signed by Miami in 2019. The former Alabama commit was a huge flip by head coach Manny Diaz and his staff. Williams was the 160th ranked player, 20th ranked CB and ninth-ranked player in Alabama in 2019.

With junior Trajan Bandy moving on to the NFL there is a lot of opportunities for the remaining CBs to step up. Rising juniors Al Blades and D.J. Ivey are expected to be the starters. Williams and rising sophomore Te’Cory Couch are expected to be the primary backups and play in the nickel package. At 6’1 182, Williams provides length.

Williams finished the 2019 season with four tackles playing in all 13 games. After entering the 2019 season with an inexperienced secondary. All but Bandy return in 2020. Williams is the tallest of the returning CBs for Miami. At 6’2, four-star 2020 signee Isaiah Dunson provides Miami with more length in coverage.
