New Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Rhett Lashlee has been busy offering quarterbacks in the 2021 class since he was hired in January. The Hurricanes have yet to get a commitment from a QB for 2021.

The Miami Hurricanes will have to replace likely starting quarterback, Houston graduate transfer D’Eriq King following the 2020 football season. The possibility exists that Miami could recruit another graduate transfer for the 2021 football season. Relying on the transfer portal for a QB each year is difficult.

Miami will definitely lose King following the 2020 season and seem likely to lose one or two backups behind him. Tate Martell and N’Kosi Perry are entering their redshirt junior seasons in 2020. Miami also has rising redshirt freshman Peyton Matocha and incoming freshman Tyler VanDyke at QB.

Some of the prevailing thinking has been that King will be the QB in 2020 with Van Dyke redshirting and competing to be the starter in 2021. Martell and/or Perry, plus potentially Matocha could decide to transfer before the beginning of the 2021 season. That makes signing a QB in the 2021 recruiting cycle paramount.

Since Lashlee was hired in January, the Miami Hurricanes have sent out scholarship offers to four QBs according to the 247Sports composite. All four QBs that have been offered by Lashlee are four-star according to 247. Miami hopes to receive visits from Miller Moss from Flower Mound, Texas and Garrett Nussmeier this spring.

Demetrius Davis who preps at North Shore in Houston, the alma mater of Miami freshman LB Corey Flagg, is a Virginia Tech commit and Aaron McLaughlin who plays at Denmark in Alpharetta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, are the other two QBs that Lashlee has offered scholarships to since arriving in Coral Gables.

Moss is the highest-ranked of the QBs Miami has offered scholarships to for 2021. He is the 51st ranked player in the country, the fifth-ranked pro-style QB and the fourth-ranked player in California for 2021. UCLA and USC are currently the favorites to receive a commitment from Moss.

Nussmeier is the 132nd ranked player, seventh-ranked pro-style QB and 23rd ranked player in Texas for 2021. LSU, North Carolina and Texas lead for Nussmeier. Davis is the 118th ranked player, sixth-ranked dual-threat QB and 20th ranked player in Texas. McLaughlin is 213th, 22nd ranked pro-style and 22nd in Georgia.

Andrew Ivins of Inside the U stated that Miami is also after three-star dual-threat QB Ari Patu from Folsom, California and four-star dual QB Jalen Milroe from Katy, Texas who is committed to the University of Texas. Neither Patu or Milroe have been offered a scholarship by Miami but bear watching in the next 10 months.
