The jersey numbers for the newest Miami football players were assigned by the Hurricanes earlier this week. Several of the new players on the Miami roster were provided numbers in place of players who wore them in 2019.

The two new players on the Miami football roster for 2020 received the two lowest numbers for the Hurricanes. Graduate transfer quarterback D’Eriq King who is expected to be the star of the Miami offense in 2020 will wear number one and defensive end Quincy Roche was assigned number two.

Nesta Silvera wore number one for Miami at defensive tackle in 2019 and will continue to wear number one in 2020. No Hurricanes offensive player wore number one in 2019. King was number four during his four seasons as a Houston Cougar. Roche will be changing from number nine at Temple to number two with Miami.

Roche was not able to request nine with the Hurricanes as redshirt freshman linebacker Avery Huff wears the number on defense. Tight end Brevin Jordan is entering his junior season wearing number nine on the offensive side of the ball. Former Miami defensive end Chad Thomas goes by agent nine as a rapper.

Thomas wore the number nine with the Miami football team from 2014-17. Incoming four-star freshman running back Don Chaney Jr. has had a lot of hype surrounding his addition to the Hurricanes. Chaney will miss the spring with a shoulder injury. He will share the number two with Roche.

Both Chaney and Roche have big shoes to fill wearing number two. K.J. Osborn led the Miami football team in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in 2019 as a graduate transfer from Buffalo. Roche will be wearing the number two that was donned by cornerback Trajan Bandy in 2019.

Four-star running back Jaylan Knighton will replace another former four-star signee on the Miami Hurricanes offense wearing number four. Jeff Thomas who is @theregoes4 on Twitter donned the number four the past three seasons for Miami. Knighton will get a long look this spring with Chaney out.

Six new players to the Miami football roster in 2020 will be wearing numbers that were not used by any Hurricanes players in 2019. All six of those players are freshmen. QB Tyler Van Dyke will wear 19, safety Keshawn Washington 25,  defensive end Chantz Williams 33 and offensive tackle Jalen Rivers 64.

Wide receivers Xavier Resteppo who will don the number 90 and Michael Redding III who will wear 83 have also been assigned numbers that no Miami football players wore in 2019. Another three Miami Hurricanes will wear numbers in 2020 that did not correlate to their side of the ball in 2019.

Kicker Jose Borregales will wear the same number 30 with Miami as he did last season with FIU. Striker Romeo Finley wore number 30 on defense in 2019. Three-star freshman offensive tackle Chris Washington is regarded as a project with the Hurricanes in 2019.

Washington will wear the same number 72 that

Tommy Kennedy

did in 2019. Kennedy was signed by Miami in December 2018 as a graduate transfer from Butler who was coveted by other Power Five schools that included Oklahoma. Originally projected as the starting left tackle, Kennedy played in only one game in 2019.

Freshman wide receiver Dazalin Worsham will wear number 84. None of the Miami players on offense wore 84 last season. Redshirt freshman defensive end Josh Neely who only participated on the practice squad in 2019 was the only Miami player who wore 84 last season.

Wide receiver Keyshawn Smith who could be a sleeper in the Hurricanes Category ’20 Class will wear number 88. Former Miami tight end Brian Polendey who entered the transfer portal wore 88 for the Hurricanes in 2019. Polendey was known as more of a blocking tight end and buried as the fourth team TE for the Hurricanes.
