Speaking for the first time this spring, expected first-team running back Cam’Ron Harris said that new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee told the Miami football team they should expect to average 35 points per game.

Rhett Lashlee was hired by the Miami football program to bring his up-tempo, spread offense to Coral Gables. Lashlee has made an impression on his players so far and according to projected first-team running back, Cam’Ron Harris said the first-year offensive coordinator told them to expect them to average 35 points per game.

Harris spoke for the first time to the media this spring after the Miami football team concluded their second practice of the spring Tuesday. Harris is expected to become the first team RB as a junior after backing up DeeJay Dallas in 2019. Freshman Jaylan Knighton and Don Chaney Jr. are likely to have a lot of carries as backups.

Chaney is out for the spring with an injured shoulder. Redshirt senior Robert Burns is mixing in this spring with Harris and Knighton. Burns became the second-team running back behind Harris for the final three games of the season when Dallas was lost for the season with a fractured elbow. Harris complimented the Lashlee offense.

"“The offense is great…I like when [Lashlee] came in with a different mindset, telling ‘This offense will be great and we will put up 35 or better every game.’..It’s just a fast type of offense. Miami…is a fast team. We can’t slow down a little bit. We can’t let the defense relax. We love the tempo. We got the defense on their toes."

Harris is ready to lead the Miami offense in 2020 with Dallas gone to the NFL a year early. Harris spoke to the Miami Herald about stepping up as a leader this fall. Harris learned a lot by watching Dallas as a leader for Miami last season.

"“I just know I have to step up and be a captain of the team, because I watched him last year,’ He’d tell the offense, ‘Let’s do great.’ If we had a bad day, he pushed us…even if we had a rainy day and we were doing bad stuff. He’d be on us every day.’ I’m on 2020 right now. …I’m feeling so good right now. Can’t wait for the season.”"

Lashlee has the pedigree to back up his proclamation about the Miami offense. Under Lashlee, SMU finished seventh in the country last season averaging 41.8 points per game. Miami was 90th at 25.7 PPG. The Mustangs improved from 54th and 30.4 PPG in 2018. A jump like that would make Miami an ACC Coastal contender.

Miami enters 2020 with the expectation that the offense will take a giant leap after an extremely inconsistent 2019 season. The bold statement by Lashlee that the offense will average 35 PPG creates an expectation for their performance this fall. If the offense can accomplish 35 PPG Miami should finish in the top 20 in scoring.
