Miami football legacy Michael Irvin II who was expected to be the Hurricanes third-team tight end this season made official what was suspected earlier this week that he will be entering his name in the transfer portal.

Redshirt senior tight end Michael Irvin II signed with the Miami football program in 2016 as one of the most highly touted three-star players as the son of the Hurricanes leader in career touchdown receptions Michael Irvin Sr. Irvin II finishes his Miami career with 11 receptions for 111 yards and no touchdowns.

The depth for the Miami football program takes a hit with Irvin departing the program, particularly this spring but the Hurricanes will survive. Miami returns first-team All-ACC junior tight end Brevin Jordan, junior Will Mallory, redshirt freshman Larry Hodges and brings in freshman Dominick Mamarelli at TE for 2020.

Irvin II came nowhere near the accomplishments his father had in three seasons, during his four seasons in Coral Gables. Irvin Sr. played at Miami from 1985-87.  A national championship, the Hurricanes all-time leader with 26 receiving TDs, third all-time in receiving yards and fourth in receptions were among Irvin Sr.’s feats.

The loss of Irvin II will be felt the most this spring. Jordan is out for the spring with a foot injury and Mammarelli is only about two months into being a college freshman. Hodges is learning his second offense in as many years and Mallory is on his third offense in as many college seasons.

Irvin II posted a message to Twitter that stated his was entering his name into the transfer portal and thanking the staffs of Al Golden for recruiting him, Mark Richt for signing and keeping him and Manny Diaz for his support. Irvin also thanked his position coaches during his time at Miami.

Irvin II made the decision to enter the transfer portal after not participating in the first three days of spring practice on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. Miami won a recruiting battle with Georgia and Michigan among others to sign the Hurricanes legacy in 2016. Irvin II is the second Miami TE to leave via the transfer portal this offseason.

Redshirt junior Brian Polendey entered the transfer portal in January. Six other former Miami football players have entered the transfer portal during the 2019-20 offseason. The losses of the former Hurricanes have throughout the team and have impacted the offense, defensive and special teams.

dark. Next. Moving Jason Blisset to DE makes sense for long term depth

Running back Lorenzo Lingard, fullback Realus George, quarterback Jarren Williams, defensive end Scott Pathcan, defensive tackle Tyreic Martin, kicker Bubba Baxa and Polendey are all in the portal are primarily looking for new schools. Lingard signed with Florida and George is attending Independence Community College in Kansas.
