Miami football familiar with games being cancelled
The Hurricanes defeated number 14 Syracuse 59-0, a week before hosting Washington and just three years after the 53 point loss. A week later the Hurricanes demolished the 12th ranked Huskies 65-7. The 117 point margin over ranked teams in back to back weeks is a record that still stands.
Miami finished the 2001 season with five wins over top 15 teams including a 37-14 victory over Nebraska in the BCS Championship Game at the Rose Bowl. Miami had 20 first-round draft picks and 33 players that were on the roster of the 2001 team who were eventually selected in the NFL Draft.
2004 Florida State at Miami, Hurricane Frances
Miami was scheduled to play its first game in the ACC on Labor Day night in 2004 at the Orange Bowl against Florida State. The Hurricanes and Seminoles were delayed four days because of Hurricane Frances. The Miami offense stalled all game until a Jon Peattie 18-yard field goal in the fourth quarter got the Hurricanes on the board.
The Peattie field goal cut the Florida State lead to 10-3. A Sinorice Moss 30-yard touchdown reception from Brock Berlin tied the game with 30 seconds remaining. Miami won the game in overtime on a Frank Gore 18-yard TD run after Miami recovered a fumble by FSU QB Chris Rix on their first overtime possession.
