The seasons for all the Miami Hurricanes spring sports have officially come to an end as expected. The ACC announced on Tuesday that all of their sports have been canceled through the end of the 2019-20 academic calendar.

The ACC had previously announced that all of their sports were previously suspended indefinitely. All of the Miami Hurricanes sports teams that had not ended their winter seasons and all of the team that were in the early stages for spring sports have officially been canceled. Several Miami teams are affected.

The spring sports that are affected for the Miami Hurricanes are baseball, women’s golf, women’s rowing, men’s and women’s tennis and track and field. The decision to cancel spring sports brings an end to some prominent Miami careers. The NCAA ruled that 2020 seniors in spring sports will have their eligibility intact for 2021.

For some of the Miami stars, that is not likely to matter. Women’s tennis star Estela Perez-Somarriba and star Miami baseball pitcher Brian VanBelle who are currently seniors are likely to begin their professional careers. That will also likely be the case with several juniors on the Miami baseball team.

Perez-Somarriba is the defending NCAA Women’s single champion and the top 10 ranked Miami Hurricanes baseball team hoped to return to the College World Series for the first time since 2016 when current Chicago White Sox backup catcher Zack Collins led them to Omaha. Miami finished the 2020 baseball season in the top 10.

"“Mar 17, 2020Statement from the Atlantic Coast ConferenceFollowing further consultation with the league’s member institutions, and after previously suspending all athletic activities indefinitely, the ACC has made the decision to cancel all athletic related activities including all competition and practice through the end of the 2019-20 academic year. The unanimous decision was made to mitigate the further spread of COVID-19. Each institution will continue to work in accordance with its respective university and state policies related to its individual campus decisions. Our top priority remains the health and safety of our student-athletes as well as our fans, communities and the overall well-being of others during these uncharted times…We are particularly disappointed for our student-athletes and will continue to work with our membership to assess what is appropriate in the future.”"

The decision by the ACC to cancel all athletics for the remainder of the 2020 academic calendar is in line with what is going on throughout the world and in the United States. It also comes after the NCAA announced the cancelation of all their championships for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year.

Also part of the cancelation of sports by the ACC for the remainder of the academic year is spring football. The Miami football team got in four practices two weeks ago before taking last week off for spring break. The Hurricanes will next get back together in late July or early August for training camp to begin the 2020 season.
