Utilizing fan voting turns the process of determining the best team in college football history into a popularity contest. Escaping great Miami teams from 1983 through 2005 would be difficult. Nebraska matched up with 1991 Washington in the first round who the Hurricanes shared the National Championship with.
"1995 Nebraska vs. 1991 Washington No. 1: 1995 Nebraska 12-0, beat Florida in Fiesta Bowl. The most dominant of Nebraska’s three national championship teams under Tom Osborne, the 1995 Huskers averaged a whopping 49 points per game and won games by an average of over 30 points on the way to a second straight national title. No. 16: 1991 Washington 12-0, beat Michigan in Rose Bowl. Washington was voted national champion in the coaches poll while Miami landed atop the media poll, but we give the Huskies the edge in 1991 for road wins over No. 9 Nebraska, No. 7 Cal and a commanding 34-14 victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl."

Nebraska won the matchup against a great Huskies defense by earning 83 percent of the fan vote. Washington was coached by University of Miami Sports Hall of Famer Don James. In the next round, the 1995 Nebraska team will contend with the 1987 Miami National Champions who defeated 1971 Nebraska.
"1987 Miami vs. 1971 Nebraska No. 8: 1987 Miami 12-0, beat Oklahoma in Orange Bowl. The Hurricanes opened the season with three consecutive wins over ranked opponents and then closed it with three wins over ranked teams. Five of those six teams were ranked in the top 10 at the time of the game. No. 9: 1971 Nebraska 13-0, beat Alabama in Orange Bowl The Huskers were absolutely dominant, beating teams by an average score of 39-8. Three different players rushed for at least seven touchdowns."
The 1987 Miami football National Championship team was the only one under Jimmy Johnson. The likelihood is in the fan voting that the 1995 Nebraska team will prevail in the quarterfinals. Next up for the 2001 Hurricanes is 10th seeded 2005 Texas. The Longhorns upset seventh-seeded 1988 Notre Dame.
The upset by Texas with 68 percent of the vote prevented another Miami Notre Dame matchup. It is always good for the Hurricanes to avenge the questionable loss in South Bend against the 1988 Fighting Irish. Cleveland Gary still did not fumble. With that call reversed, Miami probably wins three straight National Championships.
