The NCAA announced via their news twitter account Inside the NCAA on Wednesday that the dead period for recruiting has been extended through May 31. The Miami Hurricanes will have to continue recruiting electronically for another eight weeks.

Beginning when the NCAA Tournament was canceled around March 13, a dead period was instituted in recruiting due to the nearly nationwide quarantine due to the coronavirus. That ban was extended in a press release that included a post on the Inside the NCAA Twitter account. The Miami Hurricanes rely on electronic recruiting.

It has been noted frequently since the ban began about three weeks ago that Manny Diaz and the Miami football program have spoken with a multitude of recruits through facetime and have conducted meetings with their players through the meeting program zoom. Electronic recruiting will be normal for the next two months.

With early National Signing Day just over eight months away recruits across numerous sports electronic communication with committed athletes and potential recruits via FaceTime and social media are going to have to be the new norm at the very least temporarily. That might continue well beyond May 31.

The extension of the dead period for recruiting will greatly alter how football recruiting is conducted. All official and unofficial visits for football recruits are canceled through at least May 31. The spring is a very busy time of year for evaluations and college visits.

Some athletes might have to make decisions about where they will attend college without visiting campuses. The programs set up to recruit electronically more extensively will have a big advantage when it comes to recruiting. That could benefit schools with bigger budgets and bigger staffs.

The extension through May 31 is also going to impact transfers in basketball and football. Players in the transfer portal who want to make a decision on where they will play in 2020 for football and 2020-21 for basketball will be the most impact on having to decide which schools to go to without official visits.

Four-star running back Cody Brown of Lilburn, Georgia tweeted earlier this week a screen capture of him FaceTiming with the Miami Hurricanes offensive coaching staff. Miami tight ends coach Stephen Field who is currently the eighth ranked recruiter in the country for the class of 2021 was among those on the call.

The coronavirus has altered life and sports for the foreseeable future and possibly forever. Changes might need to be made how big gatherings are conducted in the future. That impacts sports and large scale concerts more than any other events. For more information about COVID-19, visit the CDC’s website or Fla. Dept. of Health.
