Two current Miami football players Max Preps HS All-Decade
Miami football players, quarterback Tate Martell and safety Bubba Bolden were named second-team high school all-decade 2010s by Max Preps.
Miami football players quarterback Tate Martell and safety Bubba Bolden picked up a pair of big honors on Monday when MaxPreps named the Hurricanes second-team high school all-decade. Martell and Bolden were high school teammates with current Miami tight end Brevin Jordan who has had a more prolific collegiate career.
Martell, Bolden and Jordan attended Bishop Gorman high school in Las Vegas. Martell and Bolden were in the Class of 2017 and Jordan graduated in 2018. Bolden began his collegiate career at USC and Martell at Ohio State. Martell and Bolden both transferred to Miami to join Jordan after his freshman season in 2018.
Martell battled with Washington Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins in 2018 to be the Buckeyes starter after redshirting as a freshman in 2017. In Ohio State’s last season under Urban Meyer Martell earned a package utilizing his skills after losing out to Haskins as the starting QB.
Martell was an elite QB in high school. The numbers he put up individually and as the leader of the Bishop Gorman football team would be Hall of Fame worthy at any other level. Martell became one of the most polarizing players in the country after appearing on the QB1: Beyond the Lights TV Show.
"QB — Tate Martell, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), Class of 2017Never lost a game as the starting QB for the Gaels. Named the MaxPreps Player of the Year and Gatorade Player of the Year after leading the Las Vegas power to a national championship. Finished his three-year career accounting for 9,801 yards (7,507 passing, 2,294 rushing) and 148 touchdowns (113 passing, 35 rushing)."
The summary above came from MaxPreps profile of Martell as part of the three-team honorees of the best high school players of the 2010s. Each of the three teams is strictly what the players accomplished in high school. Martell was ahead of QBs like Deshaun Watson and Martell’s former Ohio State teammate Joe Burrow.
Bolden began his career as a true freshman in 2017 at USC. He recorded eight tackles in his only season as a Trojan. After some off the field troubles, Bolden was suspended for the 2018 season. Bolden eventually was exonerated and transferred to Miami to reunite with Martell and Jordan.
Bolden had 11 tackles, one pass breakup and one interception for the Hurricanes in 2019. After not gaining eligibility for the first four games of the 2019 Miami football season, Bolden made his debut against Virginia Tech. Bolden played the next five games before suffering a season-ending ankle injury against Florida State.
"DB — Bubba Bolden, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), Class of 2017Never lost a game with the Gaels. Had over 100 tackles, 11 interceptions and the biggest blocked field goal in program history in a three-overtime win over St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) during his senior season."
As we head into the 2020 season, Martell is slated to be the third-team QB for Miami behind graduate transfer D’Eriq King from Houston and redshirt junior classmate N’Kosi Perry. Bolden will likely challenge senior Amari Carter to start at safety opposite Gurvan Hall who was the second leading tackler for Miami in 2019.
