Tight end should be the most talented position on offense for the Miami football team in 2020. The Hurricanes are four deep at TE including the returns of elite juniors Brevin Jordan and Will Mallory.

The Miami football team continues to be tight end U with the return of Brevin Jordan and Will Mallory for the junior seasons in 2020. Jordan was on pace to lead Miami in receiving in 2019 before missing the final three games of the season with an injury. Jordan finished 2019 with 35 receptions for 495 yards and two touchdowns.

Mallory shined with Jordan out. In the final three games of 2019, Mallory had 12 receptions for 206 yards. Mallory finished 2019 with 16 receptions for 293 yards and two touchdowns. The expectation when Jordan and Mallory signed with the Miami football team in 2018 was they would be a dangerous tandem in the passing game.

The reality has been that Jordan has lived up to his recruiting ranking as the top TE in the class of 2018. Mallory has shown the ability to be an elite pass-catcher but has lacked consistency. The tandem is now on its third offensive coordinator in as many seasons at Miami. Miami is switched from a pro-style to a spread in 2020.

The advantage with both Jordan and Mallory is that that can be split out wide as a receiver in the passing game. Miami often used David Njoku and Chris Herndon together at TE in 2016 and Jeremy Shockey was used all over the field for Miami during the 2001 National Championship Season.

With new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, Miami is going to play an up-tempo spread offense. Having the veteran leadership of Jordan and Mallory in an up-tempo offense will be a big benefit. Behind Jordan and Mallory are redshirt freshman

Larry Hodges

and true Freshman Dominick Mammerelli.

Hodges played in one game last season catching two passes for three yards and two TDs. With one game played, Hodges maintained his redshirt season. Mammerelli signed with Miami as a three-star, 6’4 245 pound player. Mammerrelli was the 416th ranked player, 15th ranked TE and 63rd ranked player in Florida in 2020.

The Miami football team is extremely talented at TE but cannot afford any injuries. The transfers of rising redshirt senior Michael Irvin II and rising redshirt junior Brian Polendey thinned out the Miami TE corps for 2020. The Hurricanes lost Jordan, Mallory, Irvin and Polendey to injuries in 2018 as the only TEs on the roster.

Polendey announced on Wednesday he is transferring to Colorado State. Polendey will join his former teammate, graduate transfer DE Scott Patchan in Fort Collins. Irvin has yet to announce a destination. Miami has to keep its four TEs healthy this season to avoid a repeat of being without a TE in 2018.
