Johnson topped off his first season as a starter in 2001 by dominating Nebraska in the Rose Bowl. As Co-MVP with quarterback Ken Dorsey, Johnson had seven receptions for 199 yards and two TDs. No one on the Cornhuskers vaunted black shirt defense could cover the 6’3 229-pound receiver with track star speed.
Johnson improved his receptions, receiving yardage and yards per catch totals in 2002 teaming with tight end Kellen Winslow II after Jeremy Shockey was a first-round pick of the New York Giants in the 2002 NFL Draft. Johnson recorded 53 receptions for 1,092 yards, nine TDs and a 21.0 YPC average in 2002.
Johnson’s 2002 season ranked second all-time in receiving yards and he was fifth all-time in receiving yards for a career when he left Miami. Johnson is currently 10th and fourth all-time in Miami football history for receiving yards in a career and a season. His performance in the Rose Bowl is fourth in Hurricanes’ history for receiving yards in a game.
Johnson led the NFL twice in receptions, twice in receiving yards, three times in receiving yards per game and three times in yards per play from scrimmage. After a 14-year career, Johnson finished 11th in receptions and receiving yards and 15th in receiving yards per game. He is a future Pro Football Hall of Famer.
