1946 Orange Bowl- Miami 13 Holy Cross 6

The Miami Hurricanes finished the 1945 regular season 9-1-1 to earn a berth to the Orange Bowl. A week two loss to Georgia and a tie with South Carolina in November were the only blemishes on the Hurricanes season. Miami finished the 1945 season 20th nationally in scoring defense allowing nine points per game.

Miami finished the regular season with eight wins and a tie after the loss to Georgia. Some of those victories would be considered marquee today. Wins over Florida, Clemson, Michigan State, North Carolina State and Auburn led Miami to its best season ever up until that point and earned them an Orange Bowl invitation.

Holy Cross entered the Orange Bowl ranked 16th in the nation with an 8-1 record and the nation’s second-ranked defense. The Crusaders allowed only 5.2 PPG. Miami scored first on a Joe Krull one-yard touchdown run. The Hurricanes missed the extra-point leaving the lead at just six points.

A Stan Koslowski to Walter Breen TD pass tied the game, but Holy Cross also missed their extra-point keeping the same even at six. Holy Cross was driving late in the game with the ball on the Miami 26 yard line. New Holy Cross QB Gen DeFilippo threw a pass that was tipped by wide receiver Bob Conway.

Al Hudson caught the ball off the tip and ran 89 yards for the game-winning TD with no time left. It was a dramatic finish to give Miami their first-ever Orange Bowl victory. If the win had been in more modern times, Hudson would be in the annals for one of the most memorable plays in Bol history.
