1981 Peach Bowl- Miami 20 Virginia Tech 10

In a game that predated the Virginia Tech-Miami Football rivalry in the Big East by more than 10 years, Hall of Famers Curt Goudy and Hank Stram called the first bowl victory of the Hurricanes modern era. The game only shows the final six minutes left in the first half and misses the two Miami TDs.

About five minutes into the video, Stram discusses being an assistant at Miami in 1959 under Andy Gustafson. Miami was appearing in the first bowl game since 1967 at the former home of the Atlanta Falcons, Fulton County stadium. Miami scored on its opening possession on a Jim Kelly to Larry Brodsky 15-yard TD pass.

The Hurricanes marched 68 yards on the opening drive to take the early lead. Miami took a two TD lead on their third possession with a 10-play, 99-yard drive. Miami finished it off with a Chris Hobbs 12 yard TD run. Kelly culminated his Hurricanes career completing 11-22 pass attempts for 179 yards, one TD, and one interception.

Kelly earned the Peach Bowl offensive MVP and Jim Burt who won Super Bowls with the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers was named the defensive MVP. Burt’s son was later a star first baseman on the Miami baseball team in the early 2000s. Two Danny Miller FGs iced the Miami win in the second half.
