1991 Cotton Bowl-Miami 46 Texas 3

A season-opening loss to BYU and October loss at Notre Dame took Miami out of the National Championship race in the Hurricanes second season under Dennis Erickson. During the bad boy era of Miami football, CBS sideline reporter John Dockery stated Miami was on its best behavior during the week.

That changed during the Cotton Bowl. The Hurricanes smashed the Longhorns in front of a partisan Texas crowd. Miami held Texas to 205 yards in total offense while committing 202 yards in penalties. The game drew ire and Athletic Director Sam Jankowitz instituted change for the 1991 season.

Miami had a semi modest 19-3 lead at halftime. The Hurricanes got on the board with two Carlos Huerta field goals and two Craig Erickson to Wesley Carroll TD passes in the first half. Texas settled for a field goal. Miami blew open the two-score game in the second half in the final game of Erickson’s career.

A 34-yard interception return for a TD by linebacker Darrin Smith and TD passes from Erickson to Randall Hill on his infamous run to the tunnel with faux six-shooters, another from Erickson to tight end Randy Bethel and a 26-yard TD Leonard Conley closed out the scoring. It was pure domination in true Miami fashion.
