2004 Orange Bowl Miami 16 Florida State 14

The 2004 Orange Bowl was the only season in the Florida State Miami football rivalry that the Seminoles and Hurricanes played twice in one season. The Orange Bowl was the last for Miami as an official member of the Big East conference and set Miami on their way to the ACC against the conference’s best program.

Miami got on the board first on a Jon Peattie 32-yard field goal on the opening drive to give the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead. A Lorenzo Booker nine-yard TD run on the first play of the second quarter gave Florida State a 7-0 lead. Florida State added to the lead with a Chris Rix to Matt Henshaw seven-yard TD pass for a 14-3 lead.

A Tyrone Moss three-yard TD run and a 44-yard field goal by Peattie on the last play of the first half cut the Florida State lead to 14-13 at halftime. Peattie kicked a 51-yard FG in the third quarter that was the difference in the game. Jarrett Payton earned MVP honors with 131 yards on 22 carries.

Florida State had a chance to take the lead in the fourth quarter by Xavier Beitia who missed what would have game-winning field goal wide left in 2002, was wide right from 39 yards with five and a half minutes remaining in the Orange Bowl. The win was the fifth in a row for Miami over Florida State.
