After a breakout sophomore season in 2018, Miami Hurricanes defensive Jonathan Garvin regressed in 2019. His lack of consistency as a junior will hinder Garvin’s status in the 2020 NFL Draft.

After making an impact in the nationally televised prime time games against Virginia Tech and Notre Dame as a true freshman in 2017, Miami Hurricanes defensive end Jonathan Garvin had a breakout 2018 season as a sophomore. Garvin was not able to build on that during a disappointing 2019 junior season.

Jonathan Garvin recorded sacks and a fumble recovered against Notre Dame and Virginia Tech in 2017 and added a forced fumble against the Fighting Irish in landmark Miami victories during a stellar 2017 Hurricanes season. Garvin followed up those performances with 60 tackles, 17.0 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks in 2018.

The 60 tackles led Miami defensive lineman in 2018. A big year was expected from Garvin in 2019, but he regressed to 37 tackles, nine TFLs and five sacks in 2019. After having five pass breakups in 2018, Garvin did not record any in 2019. Garvin’s inconsistent 2019 season was maddening for scouts.

In his final game for Miami in the 2019 regular-season finale against Duke, Garvin had 10 tackles, 3.5 TFLs and two sacks. His performance against the Blue Devils come out to more than a quarter of his tackles for the 2019 season, more than a third of his TFL and 40 percent of his sacks.

"Overview“Traits-based edge defender capable of playing 4-3 end or 3-4 rush linebacker. Garvin’s strong 2018 was followed up with inconsistent effort and an inability to stamp his presence on games with much consistency. He gains depth upfield quickly and is fairly natural at defeating the punch and flipping the corner.Pressures are nice, but sack-makers get paid and that won’t happen unless he cranks up the effort and plays to his traits and potential. Garvin has Day 2 talent, but may not go until Day 3. However, there might be gold to mine if a coach can get it out of him.”"

Garvin has frequently been criticized for his lack of performance. The above summary by Lance Zierlein of NFL.Com is not a new observation of Garvin. Garvin’s performance against Duke proves he can take a game over. More times than not last season that came from DE Greg Rousseau who is frequently praised for his effort.

Next. Garvin shows elite athleticism at NFL Combine. dark

Garvin can become a star in the NFL or he can have a short career if he continues to not put in effort on every play. At the NFL Combine Garvin led defensive ends and edge rushers with a 36-inch vertical jump and finished second in the broad jump with a leap of 125 inches. Garvin has the skills to be a good NFL Player.
