Alabama getting close to Miami football consecutive first-round record
The Miami football program set the record with a first-round pick in 14 consecutive NFL drafts from 1995-2008. Alabama is two years away from tying that record after having four players chosen in the first round in 2020.
The Miami football program had a first-round pick in the NFL Draft each year from 1995-2008. Thirty Miami Hurricanes were selected in the first round during the streak. Eight times during the 14-year streak Miami had multiple players selected in the first round.
When the Dolphins chose Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth pick in the first round on Thursday, that marked the12th year in a row the Crimson Tide had a player chosen in the first round. The Crimson Tide streak does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
At their current rate, Alabama will break the Miami record in 2023. The Hurricanes also continue to hold the record with six first-round picks in 2004. The most players drafted from one school in the first round in 2020 was four from Alabama. Miami has not had a player taken in the first round since 2017.
Tight end David Njoku went to the Cleveland Browns with the 29th pick in the first round in 2017. The Browns traded up to 29 to select Njoku. Njoku will likely become the backup TE for the Browns in 2020 after Cleveland signed former Atlanta Falcons TE Austin Hooper.
The Miami Hurricanes are expected to have two players chosen in the first round in the 2021 NFL Draft. Defensive end Greg Rousseau is projected to be taken in the top 10 in next year’s draft and tight end Brevin Jordan is expected to be selected later in the first round. Miami needs to develop more top-end talent.
The Hurricanes have continued to have players chosen in the NFL Draft over the past decade. Only four of those players were chosen in the first round. Other than Njoku, Philip Dorsett and Ereck Flowers were chosen in the first round in 2015 and Artie Burns went in the 2016 first-round.
