In an article published Wednesday on ESPN Miami football head coach Manny Diaz is taking a cautious approach about the 2020 season by being patient.

There has been rampant speculation about sports since collegiate athletics were canceled for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year about what is going to happen with the 2020 college football season. Miami football head coach Manny Diaz among those asked by ESPN what could happen for the 2020 season.

Diaz has been consistently conservative in his approach to discussing the 2020 season. Whether it’s on local media shows or with newspapers or websites, Diaz has continually stated that the coronavirus has created unprecedented times and that anyone who is speculating what can happen is based on conjecture.

The Miami football program was able to get in four practices in early March before convening for spring break. The Hurricanes were supposed to resume spring practice March 16, but three to four days before reuniting as a team is when college basketball came to a halt and all other sports followed.

The Miami coaching staff has kept in touch with the players by having virtual meetings via Zoom. Position coaches have been the primary contact with Miami players. Diaz has been a voice of reason through what is a very unique time in history. As the son of the former Mayor of Miami-Dade, Diaz has a different perspective.

"“We all know what we want, but we’ve encountered something that’s unprecedented. We have to play it out and see what we can get. That’s the difference. Let’s see how good we can get it. I believe we’ll all be appreciative for whatever we get.”"

Other coaches like Mike Gundy of Oklahoma State have spoken out about when college football should return. Diaz told his players to worry about what they can control and the Hurricanes head coach is doing the same. The return of college football at Miami will be more up to athletic director Blake James.
