Andy Staples of The Athletic

provided the Miami Hurricanes as an example when examining what a company could choose to do when approaching a star player about endorsing their brand. Could graduate transfer quarterback

D’Eriq King

develop into a star and increase his followers or would a company approach Martell?

"“But much of this business will be done through the influencer economy, where reach trumps almost everything. So if an upstart energy drink or clothing brand wants to hire a University of Miami football player to pitch its product, it might opt for backup quarterback Tate Martell (252,000 Instagram followers) over starting quarterback D’Eriq King (21,400 Instagram followers). Or maybe King, who just came to Miami as a graduate transfer from Houston, will see his follower count rise if he has success running the Hurricanes’ new up-tempo offense.”"

Playing an exciting brand of football will likely become even more important than it has in the past. Miami has always sat on a goldmine of players in South Florida. Howard Schnellenberger realized that and capitalized on the talent-rich area of Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties to build the “State of Miami.”

That state could become even more important now. Being in one of the most international cities in the United States could help Miami in recruiting. This will not happen overnight. It will take a few years and the Hurricanes still have to win on the field or the rest doesn’t matter. Miami has helped the Heat greatly in free agency.

Next. Tate Martell playing for Miami means more than you think. dark

The future should be true for the Miami Hurricanes. The ability for a player to build his brand in schools located in cities, like Miami, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Seattle, or the Bay Area are greater than the more traditional college towns. How this all plays out should help players like Martell and the U in general.
