The commitment from four-star tight end Elijah Arroyo moved the 2021 Miami football recruiting class to seventh nationally. Arroyo is the Hurricanes 14th commit and second TE for 2021.

With the likely departure of rising junior tight end Brevin Jordan after the 2020 Miami football season, the Hurricanes have been reported to want to add two players at the position in the 2021 recruiting class. The commitment of four-star Elijah Arroyo to previously committed Khalil Brantley gives Miami two TEs for 2021.

Arroyo is 6’4, 210 pounds and runs a 4.6 40-yard dash according to Andrew Ivins of Inside the U. Playing at Independence High School in Frisco, Texas, Arroyo is the 329th ranked player nationally, the 13th ranked TE and 29th ranked player in Texas in the Class of 2020. Miami beat out primarily Texas A&M for the Arroyo commitment.

With the presumed departure of Jordan after the 2020 season, Miami will likely return Will Mallory who will be a senior in 2021, Larry Hodges who will be a redshirt sophomore and Dominic Mamerelli who will be a sophomore in 2021. Mallory will be the projected starter with Jordan in the NFL.

Arroyo will provide Miami with speed similar to Jordan. As a junior in 2019 Arroyo had 48 receptions for 648 yards and five touchdowns. Arroyo made the decision to commit to Miami without an official visit. Arroyo is familiar with South Florida having grown up there before moving to Texas.

Arroyo conducted a virtual visit with Texas A&M offensive coordinator James Coley who previously held the same position with Miami. Alabama, TCU and Auburn in March were in contention to sign Arroyo after he took visits there in March. The commitment from Arroyo likely means Miami is finished at TE for their 2020 class.

The commitment by Arroyo makes him the first player out of state in the 2021 Miami recruiting class. Arroyo is the second player committed to the Hurricanes for 2021 outside of South Florida out of 14 players. Three-star athlete Marcus Curtis from Fort Meyers is the other.
