Commencing at midnight Friday, ESPN will televise a marathon of a half dozen Florida State Miami football games. The rivalry marathon will kickoff with the 2002 game and conclude with the 2004 Orange Bowl, both games won by the Hurricanes.

In the 1980s and into the early 1990s the Florida State-Miami football rivalry was the preeminent one in the nation. Several games decided national championships. It was often said winning the title of the champion of the state of Florida was more difficult than winning a national championship.

When Miami regained dominance of college football in the early 2000s the rivalry with Florida State regained importance. The half dozen games ESPN is showing Friday morning resulted in two national championships and four national championship game appearances combined.

Miami won a national championship after defeating Florida State in the games being shown in 1991 and the Seminoles captured their first after defeating Miami in 1993. The Hurricanes lost in national championship games after defeating Florida State in 1992 and 2002 seasons.

Five of the six games being shown by ESPN resulted in Miami victories. Miami won three of those games when Florida State missed field goals that would have won or tied the game. Wide Right I and II from1991 and 92 will be shown and the wide left game from 2002 will also be aired.

The only game being shown that Miami lost was in 1993. The Seminoles 28-10 victory in 1993 broke a three-game Hurricanes winning streak and a stretch of seven wins in the previous eight games in the rivalry. Miami’s only loss to Florida State from 1985-92 came in 1989 when the Hurricanes won the national championship.

Get those DVRs fired up. All six games are being presented in a two-hour window. It will be fun to relive Miami victories over Florida State. The final two games being shown were actually a pair of Florida State-Miami football games the teams played against each other in consecutive games, eight months apart.
