After the announcement that Taulia Tagovailoa entered the transfer portal, social media was abuzz that he would sign with the Miami football program. It’s far too soon to speculate if Taulia will join his brother, Tua playing games at Hard Rock Stadium.

Former Alabama quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of recent Miami Dolphins draftee Tua Tagovailoa has entered the transfer portal. The decisions by the younger Tagavailoa to leave Alabama created a mass of rumors and speculation on social media that Tagovalioa will join the Miami football program.

When Tua chose to attend Alabama, the entire Tagovailoa family moved from Ewa Beach, Hawaii to Tuscaloosa. With Tua getting drafted by the Dolphins there has been far too much speculation with Taulia’s decision to enter the transfer portal that means he will automatically sign with the Miami football program.

There has been no indication that the Miami football program is interested in Tagavailoa. Houston graduate transfer D’Eriq King is the near-certain starting QB for the Hurricanes in 2020. Miami also has redshirt juniors N’Kosi Perry and Tate Martell, redshirt freshman Peyton Matocha and true freshman Tyler VanDyke.

Adding a QB to the Miami football roster needs to be a priority by at least the 2021 National Signing Day in February. King, Perry and Martell will all be out of eligibility by the end of the 2021 football season. Matocha and VanDyke are currently the only QBs Miami is projected to have in 2022.

No QBs are currently committed to Miami in the 2021 recruiting class. The speculation where Taulia Tagovailoa could sign has ranged from Miami, FAU and FIU to Maryland and Tennessee. No one really knows what schools Taulia is considering or who has the advantage in signing him as a transfer.

Tagavailoa will have to sit out in 2020 unless he gets a waiver from the NCAA to gain immediate eligibility. That has added to the speculation he would be interested in Miami with King being the QB in 2020 and Tagovailoa ready to succeed him in 2021. Van Dyke is a good prospect who would challenge Tagavailoa.

Taulia Tagovailoa was the 180th recruit overall and the fifth-ranked pro-style QB in the class of 2020. Tua Tagaovailoa is a transcendent player. Expecting Taulia to be the same is basing his talent solely on his last name. Taulia the potential to be a good QB. Taulia is not as talented as his brother.

Taulia Tagovailoa is likely to view his options which very well could include the Miami football program. Without the waivers, Tagovailoa would have to sit out the 2020 college football season and have three years remaining to play. Perry and Martell are the likely favorites to be the starting QB for Miami in 2021.

Either Perry, Martell, or both could pursue a graduate transfer after the 2020 season to play their final year of college football. If either Martell or Perry stays at Miami would Tagaovailoa be willing to be a backup in 2021 before having a chance to start his final two seasons of eligibility in 2021 and ’22?

It seems unlikely to Tagovailoa to be willing to wait that long to become a starting QB. Tagovailoa will be eligible for the 2022 NFL Draft. A player must be three years removed from high school to become draft-eligible. The speculation will continue to run rampant until Taulia Tagovailoa has announced his next collegiate destination.
