Miami finished 6-1 in the seven games that ESPN will air. The only victory by Florida State in the marathon that will be shown was in 1993. Four of the seven games that will be shown resulted in the winner playing for the national championship at the end of that season. Miami won in 1991 and Florida State in 1993.
The 1993 game ended a stretch for Florida State with losses in seven of the previous eight years to Miami. The only victory for the Seminoles in that stretch came in 1989 when the Hurricanes went on to win their third national championship in seven seasons. That also began a stretch for FSU with six out of seven wins versus Miami.
The win by Miami in 1985 was the Hurricanes fourth in six years over Florida State. It set the Hurricanes off on a path to challenge for their second national title in three years. A loss to Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl ended that dream in Jimmy Johnson’s second season.
The two games Miami played in 2004 were the first time the Hurricanes and Seminoles played two games in the same calendar year. After ending the 2003 season in the 2004 Orange Bowl Game, Miami and Florida State opened the 2004 season at the Orange Bowl in Miami. The Hurricanes prevailed both times.
