Victory lost at North Carolina

North Carolina finished 2-9 in 2018 with their game canceled against Central Florida due to Hurricane Florence. The Tar Heels also lost to the Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium 47-10. Miami scored three defensive TDs in the victory in 2018. Miami traveled to Chapel Hill as a 4.5 point favorite following a week off.

Baxa missed two FGs against UNC including another one inside of 30 yards. The Miami Hurricanes dug themselves into a 17-3 hole after the first quarter but rallied to eventually take a 25-20 lead in the third quarter. The Hurricanes had to go for two after the go-ahead TD because Baxa’s extra-point on the previous TD was blocked.

The first missed FG by Baxa against UNC came in the second quarter after a 12-play 51-yard drive stalled at the Tar Heels nine yardline. Baxa missed what should have been an easy 26-yard FG. That would prove costly later in the game. The second miss by Baxa was a 49-yard attempt on the final play of the game.

Baxa’s misses were not the only reason Miami lost. With the lead late in the fourth quarter, the Hurricanes defense allowed UNC to convert on fourth and 17 on the eventual game-winning drive. It’s understandable, especially for a college kicker to miss a 49-yard FG attempt. The 26 yarder should have been made.
