With most of the four and five-star quarterbacks in the Class of 2021 committed to other programs, it is unclear who the Miami Hurricanes will recruit if they cannot flip four-star Texas commit Jalen Milroe.

Most of the quarterbacks high on the Miami Hurricanes recruiting board for 2021 have committed to other college football programs. Former Virginia Tech commit Dematrius Davis flipped to Auburn, Garrett Nussmeir pledged to LSU and Aaron McLaughlin to North Carolina State are a few names who were considering Miami.

Although four-star QB Jalen Milroe is committed to Texas, the Miami Hurricanes staff is still working hard to sign the nation’s 79th ranked player and fourth-ranked dual-threat signal-caller. At 6’1.5, 192 pounds, Milroe has good size for a college QB. All five crystal balls with three from regional or national experts project Milroe to Texas.

Alabama and the Miami Hurricanes are listed on Milroe’s 247Sports page as cool with the remainder of the schools who have offered Milroe listed as him having no interest in them. Miami has four QBs currently on the roster who are projected to be with the Hurricanes in 2021, but that could change.

Rising redshirt juniors Tate Martell and N’Kosi Perry will be entering their final year of eligibility in 2021. It is conceivable that either or both could decide to leave Miami as graduate transfers to seek an opportunity to start. Miami also has 2020 true freshman Tyler VanDyke and redshirt freshman Peyton Matocha.

"MAY 20: HURRICANES DOWN TO FINAL SWING IN TEXASMiami took a hit as Manny Diaz and his staff were recruiting Davis and Nussmeier incredibly hard. Luckily those weren’t the only two from Texas that Hurricanes offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee has been pushing hard for, but at the same time he’s shooting from deep on these blue-chippers.With Davis and Nussmeier off the board, he can put all his energy into trying to flip his final top target in Jalen Milroe from the Texas Longhorns. Milroe has been a pledge to Texas since July of 2019, but as we documented in the April update, he had high interest in Alabama early in the process and Nick Saban and his staff continue to lurk there after they saw their first quarterback commit in this class in Drake Maye flip to North Carolina. It’s been a tough month in general for the Hurricanes at the position as four-star signal-caller Aaron McLaughlin committed to NC State on May 14. At this point if Miami doesn’t land Milroe, it’s unclear where the ACC program goes for its signal-caller."

Steve Wiltfong, the National Director of Recruiting for 247Sports.Com, wrote the above analysis of where Miami will go at QB if Milroe holds with his commitment to Texas. There are a few options to Wilftong’s statement that it is unclear where Miami will go for its signal-caller without Milroe.

Who could Miami pursue other than Milroe?

Miami was pursuing four-star QB Miller Moss who has a final four of Alabama, LSU, UCLA and USC. The Tigers have Nussmeier already in 2021 and USC has four-star QB commit Jake Garcia. Alabama signed five-star QB Bryce Young, who Garcia has a relationship with, in the Class of 2020.

The only crystal ball has Moss signing with Michigan, who has a commit for 2021 from five-star QB J.J. McCarthy. A lot can evolve between now and the Early National Signing Day in November. With a strong season and the offense living up to its potential it conceivable for Miami to get back in the picture with several QBs.

Pursuing a transfer

Another option for the Miami Hurricanes is to sign a transfer QB for the third straight offseason. Miami signed Martell from the 2019 transfer portal and D’Eriq King during the 2020 offseason. it’s far too soon to know who that could be. Several QBs have transferred in each of the last two seasons.

Getting an experienced QB as a transfer for the 2021 season would nearly guarantee that Perry and/or Martell would transfer. The experienced QB would also provide VanDyke, who is the early favorite as the 2021 starter, a chance to learn and get more adapted to college. By VanDyke’s third season in 2022 he would be ready.

The final option, which seems unlikely is to wait until 2022 to sign a QB. Faced with that scenario, Miami would almost definitely have to add a transfer QB or sign two signal-callers as freshmen. Going into the 2022 season with only VanDyke and Matocha on the roster will not happen. Miami needs more than two QBs.
