Miami football alum Philip Dorsett one of ESPN’s biggest recruiting misses
Wide receiver Philip Dorsett was a three-star signee with the Miami football program in the class of 2011. Dorsett was an explosive but inconsistent player during his four years with the Hurricanes.
Philip Dorsett was given a scout grade of 79, ranked the 47th best wide receiver and 154th best player in the Southeast by ESPN when he signed with the Miami football program in 2011. Dorsett had excellent sophomore and senior seasons for Miami but struggled with injuries as a junior after being a backup as a freshman.
Dorsett was undervalued when he signed with Miami football as part of the 2011 class that ranked 33rd nationally and sixth in the ACC. Miami signed 21 players in 2011, only four of which were four or five stars. None of the 2011 four or five-star signees were on offense. Dorsett attended legendary St. Thomas Aquinas.
Dorsett backed up future NFL WRs Tommy Streeter, Travis Benjamin and Allen Hurns as a freshman in 2011. With Benjamin and Streeter moved on to the NFL in 2012, Dorsett had a breakout season. Dorsett led Miami in 2012 with 58 receptions for 842 yards and tied for the team lead with four touchdown receptions.
Dorsett struggled as a junior missing five games due to a knee injury in 2013. The one injury limited Dorsett to 13 receptions for 272 yards and two TDs. A senior season in 2014 led to career highs with 871 receiving yards and 10 TDs on 36 receptions. ESPN summed up Dorsett when he signed with Miami.
"Gerry Hamilton: WR Phillip Dorsett IIMiami HurricanesESPN ranking (2011): Three starsDorsett played on absolutely loaded Saint Thomas Aquinas teams that included Lamarcus Joyner, Rashad Greene, Marcus Roberson, Jake Rudock, Corey Holmes, Bobby Hart, Anthony Moten and Jelani Hamilton, among others. While other prospects on the South Florida powerhouse had more impressive measurables and were more heavily recruited on the national stage, Dorsett possessed the most explosive speed. We made a mistake by focusing on his frame — which was then 5-foot-9, around 165 pounds — instead of his 10.51 100-meter speed. Add in the fact that Dorsett also showed explosive ability with a 24-foot-7-inch long jump and 36.5-inch vertical, and this was a bad miss.Dorsett was a high-ranking three-star due to size concerns with five-star explosive athletic ability. That explosive speed and quickness ended up earning Dorsett a first-round NFL draft selection in 2015."
Dorsett’s senior season led to being taken 29th in the first round by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2016 NFL Draft. Dorsett spent two seasons in the Circle City before being traded to the New England Patriots for quarterback Jacoby Brisset. The Patriots won the AFC in each of Dorsett’s first two seasons in 2017 and ’18.
New England won LIII over the Los Angeles Rams 13-3. Dorsett signed a one-year, $1.05 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks in the offseason. The Pacific Northwest is becoming a Hurricanes haven. Other former Miami players with Seattle include tight end Greg Olsen and running backs Travis Homer and DeeJay Dallas.
