In a poll taken by ESPN from their panel of NFL analysts, college and NFL Nation reporters defensive end Calais Campbell was the only Miami football alum named to the NFL ultimate ACC all-conference team.

The selection of defensive end Calais Campbell as the only Miami football alum named to ACC’s NFL ultimate all-conference team speaks loudly about the level of talent Miami is producing for the NFL. While Hurricanes are continuing to be drafted and on NFL rosters, All-Pro and Pro Bowl players are not being produced.

Campbell has developed into one of the best defensive ends during his 12 years in the NFL. In 2017, Campbell was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 after recording 67 tackles, 14.5 sacks, 14 Tackles for Loss (the NFL records TFLs differently than college) and 30 quarterback hits. Campbell has 88 career sacks.

At the end of the 2019 season, Campbell was named to the NFL’s 2010s all-decade team. After spending the first nine years of his career in Arizona and the last three in Jacksonville, Campbell was traded to the Baltimore Ravens during the offseason. Campbell joins his new teammate Lamar Jackson on the NFL All-ACC team.

In three seasons at Miami, Campbell recorded 129 tackles, 39 TFLs and 19.5 sacks during his three seasons with Miami. Leaving following his junior season, Campbell was a second-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2008 NFL Draft. Campbell left Arizona and signed with Jacksonville as a free agent in 2017.

Campbell was listed by ESPN in the flex position on defense. The defensive formation set up by ESPN in the front seven includes two edge rushers, two defensive tackles, two linebackers and one flex position. Campbell can play LB in the 3-4 or defensive end in a 4-3 defense. Campbell is projected at DE in Baltimore by ESPN.

Campbell was named to the NFL All-ACC team without any further mentions or analysis. The Ravens have a rich tradition of Miami Hurricanes excelling on defense. LB Ray Lewis and safety Ed Reed became Pro Football Hall of Famers after stellar careers in Baltimore. Duane Starks started on their Super Bowl XXIV champions.

Campbell joins the Ravens to bolster their pass rush. Baltimore was 21st in sacks in 2019 despite finishing third in points allowed, fourth in total defense and sixth in pass defense. The Ravens were 12th in interceptions. The veteran presence he brings to the locker room and skill set on the pass rush should help Baltimore.
