The annual over-emphasis on the de-commitments from the Miami football program does not tell the entire story.

A recent story from 247Sports examined schools that have lost commited players by using the star system to assign which college football programs have suffered the most losses in their recruiting classes. The Miami football program with the de-commits mostly coming from South Florida explain the exodus.

When Manny Diaz was hired to replace Mark Richt as the head coach of the Miami football program he instituted a new policy that once players commit to the Hurricanes they cannot take visits elsewhere. That will help somewhat but it’s impossible to prevent players from de-committing and then taking other visits.

The 2021 Miami recruiting class leads the nation in cumulative stars who have de-commited. That includes running back Thad Franklin and wide receiver Jacolby George who have commited, de-commited and then re-commited to Miami. The Hurricanes have lost 21 stars of de-commits in  the 247 formula.

Florida is right behind Miami with 20 stars lost of de-commits. If you do not include Frankin and George, the Hurricanes decrease to 13 stars lost in de-commits. Four-star WR Trevonte Rucker from Ocala Vanguard, the same school that produced Miami quarterback N’Kosi Perry, is the only re-commit to Florida.

With the players truly lost from each program, Miami would have 13 stars, Florida 16. Being in South Florida and in close proximity to the most fertile area of talent in the country, Miami is more likely to lose players than any other program. Four-star WR Romello Brinson who is a Miami de-commit is announcing his commitment June 13.

The dead period caused by the coronavirus quarantine has made this spring the most unique we have ever seen in recruiting. According to 247, nearly 1,000 players are commited this spring compared to just 400 at the same time in 2019. The Miami players who have de-committed were highlighted by 247.

"No. 1 Miami Hurricanes: 21 starsThe Miami Hurricanes are typically the school which suffers the most decommitments in a given year. They effort to get the jump on the local talent in their area, only to usually have it lured away later on, or part ways with it in other cases if those prospects do not develop.Already in the 2021 cycle the Hurricanes have lost a five-star prospect, three four-stars, and four more three-stars. The leaders of the group are safety James Williams, receivers Romello Brinson and Jacolby George, and running back Thad Franklin. George and Franklin have recommitted."

The top 10 was listed behind Miami and Florida. Several blue blood programs have lost key recruits in the 2021 cycle, but the Hurricanes and Gators are far in front. Miami and Florida likely lose more players because they are the two Power Five programs with the closest proximity to South Florida. Below is the top 10.

"No. 1 Miami Hurricanes: 21 starsNo. 2 Florida Gators: 20 starsNo. 3 (tie) Ole Miss: 12 starsNo. 3 (tie) Boston College: 12 starsNo. 5 Texas: 10 starsNo. 6 (tie) Alabama: 8 starsNo. 6 (tie) Notre Dame: 8 starsNo. 6 (tie) Virginia Tech: 8 starsLURKINGLurking: Tennessee, Minnesota, Maryland"

The 247 article goes into more depth about how many of the de-commitments are coming from players who have yet to visit the campuses of schools they commited to. That is not necessarily the case with Miami. All but one of the eight de-commitments from are from Dade or Broward counties.

The de-commitments are likely to have visited Miami even if the visits were unofficial. Three-star prospect Chamon Metayer who is one of the Hurricanes de-commitments was being recruited by Miami as an edge rusher. Metayer decided he wants to be a WR or TE in college and the parties mutually parted ways.

The reasoning behind a de-commitment can often be initiated by the team or the recruit. It is not as simple as the program losing a particular player. The de-commits from the Miami football program are often not as bad as the alarms being sounded with what losing those players mean. Miami should have a top 15 2021 class.
