86 Days to Miami football: Freshman TE Dominic Mammarelli
Dominic Mammarelli signed with the Miami football program in the Class of 2020 as a three-star tight end from Naples, Florida.
Dominic Mammarelli signed with the Miami football program in 2020 to add depth for the Hurricanes a potential starter in the future at tight end. Mammarelli will compete with redshirt freshman Larry Hodges to be the Hurricanes third-team TE in 2020 with the potential of redshirting this season.
Mammarelli will have a tough time receiving significant snaps this fall behind juniors Brevin Jordan and Will Mallory. Known for his athleticism and as a blocker, Mammarelli was the 416th ranked player, the 15th ranked TE and 63rd ranked player in Florida in the Class of 2020. Mammarelli is an old school TE.
Playing in a wing-T offense in high school, Mammarelli had to be an adept blocker. He reportedly showed good athleticism during the abbreviated four spring practices Miami had before all sports were shut down in March. Mammarelli will eventually evolve into a good receiver at TE that needs the respected in the passing game.
Miami is likely to lose Jordan after the 2020 season to the NFL Draft. The Hurricanes have already prepared for that with commitments from TEs in the 2021 Class from four-star Elijah Arroyo from Dallas and three-star Khalil Brantley from Miami Northwestern. Mammarelli and the Miami TE room has a bright future.
Mallory will likely ascend to first-team TE in 2021 with Jordan’s likely departure. As a junior in 2020, Mallory will also have the option to leave for the 2021 NFL Draft. It would likely be in Mallory’s best interests to return in 2021. That would set up a competition in 2022 to be the first team TE.
Three seasons out, Miami has good depth at TE. Hodges, Mammarelli, Arroyo and Brantley will all have at least one year on the Miami football team by then. Hodges will be a redshirt junior in 2021, followed by Mammarelli in his third year with the team and Arroyo and Brantley in their second seasons.
