The potential for the Miami football program to sign five-star athlete James Williams who named the Hurricanes as a finalist on Thursday night would be the highest-rated signee since Seantrel Henderson in 2010.

The announcement by five-star safety James Williams that the Miami football program is one of two finalists for his commitment and eventual signing is a huge boost to the 2021 Hurricanes recruiting class. If Miami can sign Williams he would be the highest-ranked player to sign with the Hurricanes since 2010.

Williams is the 10th ranked player in the Class of 2021, the top-ranked athlete and top-ranked player in Florida. With a rating of .9926, Williams would be the highest-rated player Miami signs since offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson who had a rating of .9988 in 2010.

Williams would be the highest-rated defensive signee by the Miami football program since defensive tackle Marcus Fortson signed with the Hurricanes in 2008. Fortson was the 11th ranked player in the country, the top-ranked DT and second-ranked player in Florida. Forston received a rating of .9940.

Williams would be the highest-rated player in the 2021 Miami class. That honor currently belongs to four-star wide receiver Romello Brinson who commited to the Hurricanes on Saturday. A lot will change between now and the early signing period in November. The addition of Williams would boost Miami from 10th to seventh.

The Hurricanes rise in the recruiting standings nationally with the potential of signing Williams would be how the rankings are currently. Miami would pass Texas, Oregon and Florida to move up just behind Michigan. After signing four safeties in the 2020 class, Miami is not desperate to add to the position.

The addition of a generational talent like Williams would have a huge impact for Manny Diaz and the Miami defense. Williams has been compared to former Clemson hybrid linebacker/safety Isaiah Simmons. Simmons was the eighth overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL Draft in April.
