Rhett Lashlee who was hired as the new Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator in January was named the 13th best assistant coaching hire of the 2020 offseason.

Rhett Lashlee was hired in January to be the new Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator after his predecessor Dan Enos failed to revive the offense. Lashlee brings an uptempo, spread to Coral Gables. Lashlee was recently named the 13th best assistant coaching hire of the 2020 offseason by 247Sports.Com.

The ranking of Lashlee 13th and subsequent profile of the new Miami Hurricanes offensive guru was part of 247 Sports’ article “Ranking college football’s top 20 assistant coach hires for 2020.” If Miami plays as well as the offense that Lashlee ran at SMU the last two seasons he will be higher ranked at the end of 2020.

Lashlee is tasked with turning around the 90th ranked scoring offense and 98th ranked total offense in FBS in 2019. SMU was seventh in scoring offense and ninth in total offense in 2019. The key to the Lashlee offense is the tempo. SMU ran 1,037 plays in 2019 to 844 for Miami.

The Mustangs averaged 6.14 yards per play to 5.66 for Miami. SMU was 40th in yards per play, Miami 78th. If Miami runs the same amount of plays in 2020 that they ran in 2019 averaging 5.66 years per play again, the Hurricanes would have had the 20th best offense in FBS last season.

"13.) RHETT LASHLEE, MIAMI247Sports’ Take: As Miami looks to bounce back in 2020, the Hurricanes showed that they were serious about their offensive woes from 2019 when they fired Dan Enos and hired Rhett Lashlee.Previously at SMU as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2018-19, Lashlee led a Mustangs unit that ranked seventh nationally in scoring (41.8 points per game), ninth in total offense (489.8 yards per game) and 13th in passing (309 yards per game) in 2019.The 37-year-old’s resume includes offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach stints with Samford (2011), Arkansas State (2012), Auburn (2013-16) and UConn (2017).Lashlee’s addition comes at an opportunistic time as Miami adds Houston graduate transfer quarterback D’Eriq King, bringing intrigue with a pivotal second year looming for Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz."

Miami had a lot of issues on offense last season. The two biggest were the offensive line and inconsistent play at quarterback. The up-tempo system Lashlee prefers would seem to solve both of those based on the stats where Miami would have finished last season using an uptempo offense.

Next. Rhett Lashlee and D'Eriq King give UM offense identity. dark

The addition of Houston graduate transfer quarterback D’Eriq King from Houston should make an enormous difference for Miami. King is a true dual-threat QB who dominant as a passer and runner in his last full season with the Cougars in 2018. King enters the 2020 season with a passing and rushing touchdown in 15 straight games.
