Quincy Roche 2019 season one of most prolific for DE in CFB history
Since Pro football focus began tracking college football games in 2014, new Miami Hurricanes defensive end Quincy Roche had one of the most prolific seasons for a defensive end for Temple in 2019.
As reported by Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald in his column on Monday, Temple graduate transfer and Quincy Roche had one of the most prolific seasons by a defensive end in 2019 as recorded by Pro Football Focus since they have been tracking college football since 2014.
Quincy Roche, redshirt sophomore DE Greg Rousseau and redshirt junior DE Jaelan Phillips should form the nation’s best pass rush in 2020. Rousseau was second in the nation in sacks last season with 15.5 behind the second pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Chase Young of Ohio State. Roche tied for seventh nationally with 13 sacks.
Rousseau had the most sacks in FBS in 2019 among the returnees for 2020 and Roche is third. The Miami season record of 52 by the 1989 national champions should be challenged in 2020. Miami had 46 as a team in 2019 which was seventh nationally. Roche had a third of Temple’s 39 sacks in 2019 that was 16th in FBS.
Jackson quoted the analysis by PFF of Roche’s 2019 season and what might be ahead for him and Rousseau in 2020. PFF did not mention Phillips. Phillips sat out 2019, but should not be forgotten in the rotation of edge rushers for Miami. Some observations credit Phillips as the most talented of the three.
"“We all know by now that [former Ohio State star and Washington Redskins No. 2 overall draft pick] Chase Young shattered PFF records and was the most valuable edge defender of the 2019 season in regard to PFF WAA [wins above average], but the man behind him in second was none other than Roche. In fact, he had the fifth-most valuable season we have ever seen at the position since PFF College began in 2014. Roche owned an absurd 93.3 pass-rush grade for the Owls in 2019, racking up the second-most pressures in college football (68) in the process.”"
Jackson added himself that Miami “ranked 12th among the 130 units in pass-rush grade in 2019 and will likely remain that way in 2020 considering they have one of the nation’s top edge duos in Roche and Gregory Rousseau…Roche produced those 68 pressures on 392 pass rush snaps, an average of a pressure every 5.7 snaps”
Those numbers produced by Roche as pointed out by Jackson “is awfully impressive.” As previously stated Phillips will be a big part of the Miami Hurricanes rotation of edge rushers and the coaching staff has high expectations for redshirt freshman DE Jahfari Harvey. Miami’s pass rush will be devastating in 2020.
