Russell Maryland won national championships with the Miami football team in 1987 and 89 and three Superbowls with the Dallas Cowboys during his NFL career.

Russell Maryland is one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the history of the Miami football program. Maryland was an anchor on the Hurricanes defensive line during the 1987 and 1989 National Championship teams. As a senior in 1990 Maryland had 96 tackles, 19 QB pressures and10.5 sacks.

Maryland topped off his Miami football career and senior season by becoming the first Miami football player to be awarded the Outland Trophy as the best defensive lineman in college football. Maryland earned first-team unanimous All-American selection in 1990 as Miami went 10-2 and defeated Texas 46-3 in the Cotton Bowl.

Maryland was unblockable in the victory in the Longhorns home state. In the Hurricanes’ dominant victory, Maryland totaled nine tackles and three sacks as Texas could not move the ball all day against the Miami defense. The 43 point Miami victory set the record for the largest margin in Cotton Bowl history.

Maryland recorded  279 tackles, 25 tackles for loss and 20.5 sacks during his Miami career. During Maryland’s four seasons in the green and orange, in addition to the two National Championships, Miami played in four straight New Year’s Day Bowl games in the middle of a four-year streak and went 45-3.

Following his Miami career, Maryland was selected first overall by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1991 NFL Draft by the coach who recruited him to Coral Gables, Jimmy Johnson. Maryland continued to earn rings winning three Super Bowls in his five seasons with Dallas. He played four for the Oakland and one in Green Bay.

Maryland was a 2001 inductee into the University of Miami Hall of Fame and enshrined into the  College Football Hall of Fame in 2011. Maryland made the 1991 All-Rookie team and was named to the 1993 Pro Bowl. An anchor on the Cowboys defensive line during their Superbowl runs started 140 of the 154 games he played.
