Miami football context of SMU 2019 offensive numbers
Buchele is not nearly the threat of running the football that King is. King should obliterate the Miami season record for rushing yards by a QB. King ran for 674 yards and 14 TDs in 2019. A record to track in 2020 is King enters the season with 15 consecutive games with a rushing and passing TD, an FBS record.
Another milestone for SMU in 2019 worth noting is that Buechele threw for 457 yards against Temple last season. That was the fourth-highest total in SMU history. Miami and Temple open against each other at Hard Rock Stadium on September 5. That should instill confidence in the Miami offense in the season opener.
SMU shredded the Owls defense last October. The Mustangs finished with 655 total yards. Jones added 105 rushing yards in addition to Buechele’s big game. SMU WR Reggie Roberson had eight receptions for 250 yards and three TDs. Proche was held to nine receptions for 80 yards at a TD.
Miami has the potential for a big game offensive on opening day. Temple was 49th in scoring defense in 2019 allowing 25.9 points per game. The Owls were 54th in total defense in 2019 allowing 377.8 yards per game. Temple finished 73rd against the run and 59th against the pass in 2019. Miami should be explosive offensively.
